Walking Gottingen is a soundwalk production that, with community consultation, has gathered and creatively showcased diverse stories of people who have made a community truly what it is.

Walking Gottingen uses storytelling and natural sounds to provide a completely immersive experience for listeners as they walk down Gottingen Street in Halifax’s North End. Listeners have the opportunity to hear stories from residents who have experienced anti-black racism, homophobia, and postcolonial attitudes in a neighbourhood that is undergoing gentrification.

Historically, this area in the North End of Halifax has been associated with crime, drug abuse, and poverty. As a result, there has been an over-saturation of negative stories in news media. By experiencing this soundwalk, listeners will hear intimate, moving descriptions of an area that has been home to African Nova Scotians, LGBTQ+ folk, and members of Mi’kmaq communities for generations.

Beginning at the Gottingen and Cornwallis St intersection, then weaving in and out down to Gottingen and North, you will hear from a number of past and present community members talk about their experiences thriving in the community.

This project is intended to be experienced while travelling along Gottingen St. If you’re from away, keep it in mind for next time you’re in Halifax. If public health measures do not allow you to visit Gottingen St for the moment, make plans for a later date. This project will remain publicly accessible through the Halifax Public Libraries.

A downloadable transcript of the audio file will be available through Halifax Public Libraries. Details will be posted at www.mayworkshalifax.ca
